While browsing the web to find the best brunch restaurants in Vancouver, the name Jam Café came back countless times. In fact, I walked by this café on several occasions and I was quite intrigued by the long line up at the entrance.
Truth is that I am trapped in a weird pattern. Every time people make a fuss about a place, I set my expectations so high that I inevitably end up being disappointed. So from the moment I heard that Jam Café was possibly THE best brunch spot in town, it started with a serious handicap.
The Atmosphere
Jam Café has two locations in Vancouver and one in Victoria. I went to their café located on 4th Avenue in Kitsilano.
The inside is rather laid back. No matter the day of the week, there is often a pretty long line up at the entrance. If you are planning to brunch there, be mentally ready: you will have to wait. If you want to beat the crowd, I would recommend to go for a very early breakfast from 8am or a late lunch from 2pm.
The Food
The Fat Elvis Waffle $18
Let’s cut to the chase. Jam’s Café lives up to its reputation. The Fat Elvis Waffle is the best waffle I have ever eaten. It is topped with caramelized bananas, sugar cured bacon and peanut butter. It may sound strange to some, but believe me, this combination works amazingly well. The waffle soaked in peanut butter was fantastic, the bacon was juicy yet crispy, and the caramelized bananas were delicious. The overall balance was perfect. If you are a bit of an adventurer, give it a try!
Buffalo Blue Benny (half-size) $15.50
My boyfriend was not super hungry so he ordered the half-size Buffalo Blue Benny. He regretted not going for the full size after one bite. The English muffin was topped with a piece of fried chicken and a poached egg. It was dressed with some hollandaise, pickled cabbage and blue cheese. The benny came with a side of shredded hash browns. I had a mouthful and I have to admit, it was terrific.
Pulled Pork Pancake $20
The Pulled Pork Pancake is another great option. It was extremely filling so I was not able to handle a lot of it at 9am… Jam Café layers pulled pork and jalapeno sour cream between two stacks of pancakes. The toppings consist of pickled cabbage, cilantro and more pulled pork coated in maple bourbon BBQ glaze. This gave an interesting sweet and savory taste to the pancakes.
The Later Tater Bowl $20
Jam Café is renowned for its signature bowls. The Later Tater was a killer. The picture doesn’t make is justice but it was huge. The two sunny side eggs were hiding pulled chipotle chicken, cheddar, corn salsa and tater tots. The dish was seasoned with buffalo sauce and chimichurri for extra spiciness. This hearty dish was another hit that didn’t leave me hungry.
Overall
Jam Café did not disappoint. Honestly, I understand the hype about this place and I think it is worth lining up for (although I would recommend going there for a late lunch to avoid standing in line). The food is delicious, the portions generous, the service good and prices are reasonable.
