kit kat shibuya

If you have ever set foot in the land of the rising sun, you cannot have missed the craze that surrounds Kit Kat. Those little chocolate bars overflow the shelves of any conbini, supermarket or souvenir shop. What truly sets them apart from other chocolates is their unique and often eccentric flavors. Sake, wasabi, red pepper – name it, they have it!

I got very excited when I heard about the Kit Kat Chocolatory at the new Miyashita Park in Shibuya, so I decided to check it out to discover what kind of limited-editions were in store!

The Atmosphere

To my surprise, it was far from the exotic experience I had imagined. The space was beautifully designed and the chocolates were wrapped in premium single packaging. Most chocolates were sold at around 350 yen a piece and they even had gift boxes that would be a perfect present or omiyage (souvenir).

The Food

But let’s cut to the chase. The main purpose of my visit was to try one of the extremely mouth-watering Kit Kat waffles (1,000 yen). They had caught my eyes a while back when I first visited Miyashita Park.

My friend went with the Strawberry Chocolate Waffle (left) while I chose the Chestnut Chocolate (right) one. No disappointment here! The waffles were a bit dry, but we went right before the closure at around 7.30pm, so it was most likely not their freshest batch. The rest was pure wonder. The whipped cream, Kit Kat bars and ice cream combo hit the spot. The waffles are massive so avoid big meals before going if you want to eat an entire one (which you should)!

If you are interested in chocolate-making, you can customize your own Kit Kat bars there for 2000 yen. It may be a fun activity to do if you have some free time, but try to book ahead because it seems to be popular. With Valentine’s day coming up, it may be the perfect occasion to give it a try!
