A few years back, I was really struggling to find varied and filling salads in Tokyo. I would usually hit a family restaurant, which did the trick, but the lack of variety made it plain and boring. Luckily, salad bars and restaurants have been booming these past years, and we now have more options than ever. Below are my top 5 salad restaurants in Tokyo.

1. High Five Salad

Smoked Duck & Honey Nuts (regular size) 1,180 yen

If you are into healthy eating and lifestyle, High Five Salad is the perfect salad bar. They have a good menu selection, different size options and seasonal items. I usually go for the large Protein Power Cobb Salad, which is filling (the photo does not make it justice). This is by far my favorite salad restaurant taking into account the quality, quantity, price and service.

PS: their healthy seasonal smoothies are absolutely delicious!

Pros: calories displayed on the menu, nutritional information available on their website, set menus available, hot noodle salads in winter, cashless service, delivery possible within Shinjuku ward, terrace (Waseda branch), point card system

Cons: No fully customizable salad option

2. Margo Salad

Margo Salads concept is about well-being and sustainability. You can choose between regular and large portions, but the bigger size ends up being a bit expensive (1,600 yen). I usually find that there is more lettuce than toppings, but overall, this is a great option for a salad meal.

Pros: calories displayed on the menu, nutritional information available on their website, fully customizable salad option available

Cons: on the expensive side, the rushed fast-food-like service, some branches close early in the afternoon

3. SaladStop!

My number 3 is SaladStop!. There is a good salad selection and prices are reasonable. This joint is originally Singaporean and the concept is also about healthy-eating and lifestyle. I like how you can adjust the amount of dressing and specify how finely you want your lettuce to be chopped.

Pros: fully customizable salad option available

Cons: calories and nutritional information only available online, the Japanese branches have drastically less salads and toppings available than what is advertised online

4. Mr. Farmer

Mr. Farmer is not a salad bar per se, but it does have good salads made with organic and extremely fresh ingredients.

Pros: organic ingredients, set menus available, vegan menu, terrace (Omotesando and Shinjuku)

Cons: no calorie or nutritional information available in-store or online, no fully customizable salad option, salads are on the light side, long waiting lines

5. Citron

Citron is a Parisian-style salad bar in Aoyama. They use local and organically sourced ingredients and their menu is vegetarian.

Pros: organic and locally sourced ingredients, fully customizable salad option available, vegetarian menu, (tiny) terrace, set menu available

Cons: no calorie or nutritional information available in-store or online, additional toppings are expensive
