bubby's inside

A few months ago, I shared an article with you about Blu Jam Café Daikanyama. Up until now, Blu Jam has been by far my favorite brunch spot in Tokyo. Unfortunately, mainly due to the impact of the Coronavirus, the Daikanyama branch will close its doors at the end of this month.

Even though I am saddened by this news, I am somewhat excited that my quest to find Tokyo’s hottest brunch spots is back on. Bubby’s in Akasaka had been waiting on top of my go-to list for a while, so I gave it a try.

bubby's inside

The inside of Bubby’s is spacious and cozy. There is also a covered terrace with many seats outside, if you feel like enjoying your brunch or your cup of coffee in the fresh air.

Steak Eggs Benedict (1,800 yen)

I tried the Steak Eggs Benedict from the Brunch Special menu. At first, I did not know what to expect from this rather unusual Benedict, but I have to say that it surprised me for the best.

The steak was cooked medium rare and laid on a bed of spinach. They used traditional muffin bread, but they traded the usual Hollandaise with a Béarnaise sauce, which I found very tasty. There were two poached eggs on top of the steak, which turned out to be perfectly cooked. As a side dish, I could choose between hash browns or salad. I went with the latter, which was a smart move given how full I was after finishing my plate!

My boyfriend went with one of the hearty, filling and standard American brunch plates. It was not much to be impressed by, but still enjoyable. It featured a pancake, two eggs (any style), some crispy bacon, hash browns and fresh grapefruit.

I was really full, but I pushed it and we shared a dessert. We went with the classic apple pie. It was served hot and extremely cinnamony. As simple as it was, I found it very tasty.

Overall

Bubby’s is one of those names that comes back pretty often when looking up Tokyo’s best brunch restaurants. It indeed is a solid option for brunch lovers. Now that Blu Jam Café Daikanyama is closing down, I will probably go back again, even though it did not have the little spark that I was hoping for.

If you are very health conscious, you will probably find that Bubby’s is lacking healthy options such as soy milk lattes or freshly-made smoothies. However, I think it is a brunch spot that is worth trying at least once. If you are looking for a place that is quieter and less chain-like, Jade 5 in Hiroo may be more to your liking.
