aux merveilleux de fred

Craving some sweets? Well good news! There is a new comer in Kagurazaka that might spark your interest. The bakery Aux Merveilleux de Fred originally from Hazebrouck, a small city of Northern France, has just opened its first shop in Tokyo.

The Atmosphere

As you walk by, Aux Merveilleux de Fred does not easily go unnoticed because of its huge chandelier, which is visible from the street through their front window. The gold interior is a nod to the opulent lifestyle of the 18th Century French high-society.

It is this period of history that apparently inspired the recipes of the shop signature’s sweets called Merveilleux, which are confectionaries made of whipped cream and meringue.

The Food

I went to Aux Merveilleux de Fred around mid-afternoon and tried three of their mini-sized confectionaries: The Sans-Culotte, The Magnifique and The Merveilleux (320 yen each).

I picked The Sans-culotte because I am a caramel maniac. I was disappointed because the taste of the caramel was too subtle, but the crystallized meringue coating was enjoyable.

The Magnifique was definitely my favorite out of the three! The praline whipped cream was extremely light and flavorful, and the crispiness of the almond chips and caramelized hazelnuts perfectly counterbalanced the creamy, almost foamy, texture of this sweet.

I loved The Merveilleux. The chocolate whipped cream was not too overpowering, so the shavings of dark chocolate nicely accentuated the flavors of the cream. The contrast of texture between the shavings and the cream was also very well thought-out!

Overall

Each Merveilleux was so light that they literally melted in the mouth. The mini-sized confectionaries are a smart way to sample several flavors without feeling heavy or guilty after you are done eating!

Aux Merveilleux de Fred has two floors with a few tables, and it also has a terrace that opens on good days. If you are in Kagurazaka and are craving some sweets, Aux Merveilleux de Fred is definitely a nice option!
