longrain

If you want to level up your regular Thai dining experience, Longrain Tokyo in Ebisu offers modern Thai cuisine. It is located at the top of the 39th floor of Yebisu Garden Place Tower, so it offers an astonishing panoramic city view. You can even get a good view of the Tokyo Tower as part of the skyline.

The Drinks

gin sin & ping pong

Gin Sin (left) & Ping-Pong (right)

I love enjoying amazing views while sipping on a tasty cocktail, and Longrain’s signature cocktails (1,200 yen) are definitely worth a try! I recommend both the Gin Sin and the Ping-Pong. These two exotic beverages are well balanced and they will liven up your mood before dinner.

If you like sweet cocktails, go for the Ping-Pong. With its notes of lychee and passion fruit, you will instantly feel a tropical vibe. If you like more classic cocktails, the Gin Sin is the Thai version of a Gin Tonic. Longrain twists it up by adding some ginger, lychee and kaffir lime leaf, which results in a wonderful spicy, yet refreshing combination!

pepperwood grove chardonnay

Besides cocktails, I also tried Longrain’s 2018 Pepperwood Grove Chardonnay, a light and fruity Californian wine. This white wine was refreshing and paired remarkably well with the green curry.

The Food

Due to the harsh impact of the Coronavirus, many restaurants are making special deals to attract customers. In June, Longrain had a special ‘Come in 2 and pay for 1’ campaign. This offer was only valid for their dinner Signature Course (5,800 yen). I was counting my lucky stars to get a deal that good!

miang kham

Miang Kham

We started with some one-bite appetizers called Miang Kham. These Thai leaf wraps were very flavorful. The left one was filled with coconut, cashew and chili. Even though it tasted great, it lacked substance. The sweet and savory combination of the right one, topped with prawns and pomelo was much more enjoyable.

thai spring roll

Thai Spring Roll

The Thai Spring Roll was simple but tasty. The side dip was great and nicely accentuated the flavors of the roll.

filled eggnet

Filled Eggnet

Visually, the Filled Eggnet was impressive! This laced omelet hid a mix of pork, prawns, peanuts and bean sprouts. It was served with a wonderful sweet sauce that nicely highlighted every ingredient. No wonder why it is Longrain‘s signature dish!

crying tiger

Crying Tiger

The hanger steak was really tender. It came served with hot and sour sauce. If you’re wondering why this dish is called Crying Tiger, it is because the spices are said to be so hot that they would even make a tiger cry….

Stir-fried Asian Greens

I absolutely loved the Stir-fried Asian Greens! They were served in garlic and oyster sauce that brought out the best of the natural flavors of the vegetables.

seafood green curry

Seafood Green Curry

The Green Curry was served really spicy. It was good, but it did not blow my mind. I honestly think that you can easily find better green curry at cheaper Thai restaurants in Tokyo.

Pad Thai with Peanuts, Chili and Lime

The Pad Thai is my usual go-to when I eat Thai, and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by Longrain’s Pad Thai. Except for the peanuts and the greens, there were no other toppings, so it felt overly simple. A couple of prawns would have made a huge difference.

seasonal dessert

Longrain’s Seasonal Dessert

The sweet potato and caramel ice cream combo won me over. This refreshing dessert may not be the most authentic Thai dessert, but it tasted great.

Overall

Longrain Tokyo is not your traditional Thai restaurant. The special campaign ‘Come in 2 and pay for 1’ made it an incredible deal, but quite frankly, if all you want is to enjoy tasty Thai food, there are tons of cheaper places in Tokyo that will offer you just that. Longrain‘s weak spot layed in their Thai classics such as the Green Curry or the Pad Thai, which is a pity.

That being said, if you are looking for a special setting, a gorgeous atmosphere, or an amazing city view with very well-made cocktails, Longrain Tokyo is a great spot!
