sushi fukuju

Looking for a sushi treat? Head to Sushi Fukuju in Ginza for a wonderful dinner and an incredible city view! For my birthday, I was lucky enough to be taken to this high-end sushi restaurant to indulge in perfectly crafted nigiri and other fish delicacies.

The Atmosphere

Sushi Fukuju is located on the 8th floor of a building that overlooks one of Ginza’s main shopping streets. The restaurant has a really intimate atmosphere which makes it the perfect place for a special date or small gathering.

As soon as the elevator opened its door, we were politely greeted and taken to a private room where we took place at a counter with a scenic view.

The Food

For dinner, Sushi Fukuju offers omakase courses that range from 9,800 yen to 17,000 yen per person. However, the cheapest course is only available on weekdays.

Our meal started pretty much as soon as we sat down. We were served a light, yet extremely flavorful, soup that came along with a mouth-watering piece of medium-fatty tuna sushi.

medium fatty tuna

Medium-fatty tuna

The sushi was served already seasoned with a minimal amount of soy sauce to not overpower the natural flavors of the fish. The tuna was so tender it was divine!

tofu tuna monkfish lotus root

Greens, tofu, tuna’s head, monkfish liver, lotus root

Next came a plate with various bite-sized otsumami. The monkfish liver was a delight. I am used to a crumbly texture, but this one held up very well. Quite unexpectedly, the tofu turned out to be my favorite. Its was firm, yet creamy, and the peanut flavoring was on point.

skipjack tuna

Skipjack tuna

The skipjack tuna literally melted in the mouth. It was served with karashi to add spiciness, but I may have enjoyed it more with some classic wasabi.

sushi platter

Red clam, mackerel, squid, kue fish

Like the medium-fatty tuna nigiri, all the pieces of sushi were pre-seasoned. I am usually not a fan of squid because I often find it rubbery, but this one was not the slightest bit chewy. My favorite piece was the red clam. Its crunchiness delicately counterbalanced the softness of the rice.

kinmedai

Kinmedai (Splendid Alfonsino)

The kinmedai (Splendid Alfonsino) was good, but it did not particularly taste better than the one I had eaten at more casual places.

caviar donburi

Four egg donburi (caviar, salmon roe, flying fish roe, oboro)

The Four Egg Donburi turned out to be amazing. It was extremely fresh and well-balanced. I had never eaten caviar before, so after 28 years, I was more than ready to try it. Even though I loved the strong ocean flavor of this dish, I won’t put that on the caviar’s account. In any case, I am glad I could take it off my to-eat list!

nigiri platter

Sea urchin, mackerel, tuna, salmon, fatty tuna

And more sushi came. This was by far my favorite sushi set of the evening. The sea urchin was so good I had to close my eyes to avoid any distractions while enjoying it. At Sushi Fukuju you can upgrade your sea urchin at some extra cost, but I was plenty satisfied with the selection that came with my course.

tuna maki eel egg

Tuna maki, salt-water eel, egg

I thought it was about it, but a final plate came. The eel was great, but I wish it was seasoned with a little bit more tare sauce.

birthday cakes

Birthday cakes!

Last but not least, the birthday cakes! Not only did they look gorgeous, they also tasted good. This was the perfect ending of the meal. It was a nice surprise and I truly appreciated the discretion of the staff — I have never been a big fan of public attention. This did make my day feel special!

Overall

I had a wonderful sushi dinner at Sushi Fukuju. The food was top quality and the intimate atmosphere made it an unforgettable meal. It is not a cheap restaurant, but if you are in for a treat with a special someone who loves sushi, I think it’s worth the money.

The service was impeccable, I did not feel rushed while eating. The staff was extremely attentive to respect the natural flow of our meal and everything came at the perfect time.

I can only recommend Sushi Fukuju and I hope I will have the chance to eat there again!
