jade 5

Hiroo is such a cool area to walk around. I really love its international vibe, and it is a real food lover’s paradise. There are so many eateries that you could easily spend an afternoon hopping from one place to another.

I knew I had to try Jade 5 since it is one of the best rated breakfast places in Tokyo and I love going out for brunch. It is located at the corner of a small alley in a lovely neighborhood filled with cute boutiques and restaurants.

jade 5 inside

Jade 5 has just about 10 seats, so it is definitely more suited for couples and small groups. Unless you are an early-bird, be ready to wait before getting a seat on weekends. There is an open area in front of the restaurant with some benches, so the wait is not unbearable.

Eggs Florentina Benedict with Salmon (900 yen)

I ordered the Eggs Florentina Benedict with Salmon and absolutely loved it. Instead of muffin bread, Jade 5 puts its poached eggs on original home-made biscuits. The eggs were perfectly cooked and there was just the right amount of hollandaise sauce. However, I found the sauce too subtly flavored. The dish came with a tasty side of fried potatoes, but the serving was a bit small.

My boyfriend went with the Spinach & Mushroom Omelette. The omelette turned out smaller than expected and it was on the plain side. The natural flavors were good, but he wouldn’t pick it again.

banana walnuts french toast

Banana & Walnuts French Toast (800 yen)

Since we both had some space left after our mains, we decided to split the Banana & Walnuts French Toast. The serving was pretty generous and it tasted great. The bread was very eggy and fluffy, which we both enjoyed a lot. Bananas and walnuts are just meant for each other so we were very satisfied with the toppings too. It was perfect to finish us off and we left Jade 5 full!

I really liked Jade 5. My only complaint is that, except for the French toast, the helpings were a bit small. Their prices are definitely reasonable; we paid around 4,500 yen for two mains, one dessert and 3 coffees. If I happen to be in Hiroo around breakfast time, I would definitely visit Jade 5 again. However, taking into account the size of the servings, the limited menu and the small space, I would most likely choose Blu Jam Café over Jade 5 as a regular brunch place.

PS: If you are a dog owner, both Jade 5 and Blu Jam Café are pet friendly!
